Tryout Process
- All
players will be evaluated using the approved Roxbury Soccer Club tryout forms.
- All
prospective travel team players must attend the primary team’s tryouts to be
considered eligible for a Roxbury Soccer Club travel team.
-
During the Spring 2008 season, every coach of a Roxbury Soccer Club travel
team will rank order the current players on the team; with a ranking of “1”
given to the best player (in their personal opinion) down to the last player
on the team. This ranking information will be given to the Travel Teams
Tryout Coordinator prior to the tryouts being conducted.
- Two
Independent evaluators and the elected coach or team’s trainer will be used
during the tryout.
-
Evaluations will be based on small-sided matches of 3v3 or 4v4 on a small
field with no goalkeepers. Each game should last 10-15 minutes and teams will
switch to a new opponent for the next game. Each player should play up to 4
games. With a larger group, you may play more.
- For
full-sided teams, a goalie tryout may be conducted to determine the primary
goalie. The highest rated goalie would then be selected for the team. If the
primary goalie is not selected via the results of the goalie tryout, the coach
would have to use a discretionary pick if the coach wants to select a goalie
that did not finish in within the top 15 players. It is not necessary to
conduct a goalie tryout for small-sided teams.
-
Tryout results will be collected and tallied by the Travel Teams Tryout
Coordinator. In the event the Coordinator is affiliated with or has a child
participating in the tryout for a particular team, the Travel Team Coordinator
will collect and tally those results.
- The
method of tally will be as follows:
- Each tryout evaluator
will score each tryout participant using the provided form.
- The Tryout
Coordinator will calculate by evaluator, a gross score for each
tryout participant.
- By tryout evaluator,
each tryout participant will be ranked in order from 1 through to the total
number of participants.
- The rankings are then
averaged with the coach’s Spring 2008 season ranking. Thus for current
travel team players, there will be up to 4 rankings to be averaged. For
non-current travel team tryout participants, there will be 3 rankings to be
averaged.
- The
final rankings will then be forwarded to the elected coach and the Travel Team
Coordinator.
Discretionary Picks
For
full-sided teams, generally the top 16 players are selected, although up to 18
can be selected. For small-sided teams, generally the top 12 players are
selected, although up to 14 can be selected. The coach has 2 discretionary
picks available to them. The coach can select a player that fell below the top
16 (full-sided) or top 12 (small-sided) to be on the roster. If the coach makes
use of 1 or both discretionary picks, then the bottom rated players that would
have made the team would have to be dropped. The travel team coordinator must
approve any other discretionary selections. Discretionary picks can not be used
to add out of town players.
Out-of-Town Players
-
Small-sided teams cannot have out-of-town players.
-
Full-sided teams can have up to 3 out-of-town players.
- If a
player is from a different town, but goes to school in Roxbury they are
considered an in-town player.
Extra Players from Tryouts
If there
are players left over from a tryout, additional teams may be formed (with
Executive Board approval) based on the following priority:
- An
age-appropriate team may be formed if there are at least 11 Roxbury age
appropriate players (small-sided team) or 14 Roxbury age appropriate players
(full-sided team) left over after the first team is selected. No second
tryout is necessary.
- A
divisional team may be formed if the number of players left over after the
first team is selected cannot be met for an age-appropriate team. A second
tryout would be conducted.
Notification of Players
- The
players will be notified that they made or did not make the travel team at the
end of the season. For 2008, that date is Sunday, June 15.
- When
contacted by the coach the player should be prepared to answer yes or no to
the offer to play. By that time you should know if this is a commitment your
child and family are willing to make. Your decision could have impact on other
players also waiting for a call as the spots on the team are limited.
-
Players that refuse to play for their age-appropriate team, unless they are
grade appropriate for the older team, cannot play on another Roxbury Travel
soccer team.
Extenuating
circumstances will be reviewed by the Travel Team Coordinator.
Playing Up
A younger player may play
up one age group but must finish in the top 50% of the final roster of the “A”
team to be eligible to play for the older team.
Players who are not age appropriate but are grade appropriate do not have to
finish in the top 50% but are considered “age appropriate” for the purposes of
the tryout.
